UNITED BEATEN IN FIRST ROUND

Bradford's West Riding Cup Rally

LAST-MINUTE GOAL

There appeared to be little prospect of Bradford winning their West Riding Senior Cup first round tie with Leeds United at Park Avenue, yesterday, when, at half-time, they were two goals down, but rallied splendidly to win 3-2. Leeds United played the better football in the first half. Ainsley and Stephens (A.) scored for them, and it was only on comparatively rare occasions that the United goal was in any danger. During the opening period of the second half, too, Leeds maintained their grip, and should have gone further ahead when Armes had a wonderful chance. With only Hanson to beat, however, he shot against the Bradford bar. This escape seemed to put new life in the Avenue team, and, storming to the attack, they not only equalised through goals by Wesley and Bruce, but won the match a few minutes from the end when Smith charged Savage and the ball into the net before the goal-keeper could clear a drive by Wesley. It was a creditable win for Bradford, but the manner in which Leeds fell away in the second half was very disappointing even Ainsley failing to pull the attack together. Wesley was the craftsman in the Bradford forwards. BRADFORD: Hanson; Stevens and Picken; Jones, Phillips and Davidson; Padgett, Wesley, Smith, Bruce and Hays. LEEDS UNITED: Savage; Milburn (Jas) and Scaife; Hampson, Kelly and Browne; Armes, Ainsley, Stephens (J. W), Stephens (A.), and Buckley. Referee Mr. G. Cunliffe (Halifax).
